Navajo Pow Wow

In honor of American Indian culture and the Navajo people I had a distinct pleasure to observe and photograph while traveling across American Southwest back in 2010. Pow-wow is a gathering of American Indian people in which they dance, sing socialize and celebrate their culture and traditions. Dancing competition during which I took these images took place to the beat of the drums and traditional tribal singing inside a big circle.Warrior dances were just most spectacular, so were the traditional costumes. Most wonderful… i can still hear the beat of the drums…

Rodeo – Part 2

Second batch of images from the Rodeo at Frying Pan Park in Herndon. This time it’s the girls barrel racing. All I can say, these girls can ride. Wow!

The object of the race is to safely and successfully maneuver a horse through a clover leaf pattern around three barrels placed in the center of the arena and to do so in the fastest time.

Rodeo – Part 1

Here’s a photo essay from a professional bull riding rodeo at the Frying Pan Farm in Herndon, Virginia. What these guys do is entertaining but also extremely dangerous and I hope to some degree I was able to reflect that in these images. Things happen out there very quickly and with rather poor lighting, conditions presented a bit of a challenge for me. The event was indoors and the use of fast shutter speeds was simply impossible. I was shooting wide open at f/2.8 to f/4 and ISO 1280. No flash. If I were to do this again, I would probably just bring two lenses mounted on two cameras, a 70-200mm and my wide-angle (which I did not have with me). My 70-200mm performed great as usual. I love this lens. Wished I had my wide-angle for some close ups of the cowboys…. My 24-105mm was a bit too slow and not wide enough.
